What drywall repair covers
Describe your job once. Anything not on the list, say so and the pro prices it with the rest.
- Nail and anchor holes, doorknob holes and dents patched and sanded
- Larger holes cut square and patched with new board, taped and mudded in coats
- Settling and corner cracks taped so they do not come back the next season
- Water stained drywall cut out and replaced once the leak is fixed
- Plaster and lath repairs in older homes, with the texture matched
- Primer and paint to blend the patch, or the whole wall when the paint has faded
Have ready when you book
- A photo of each spot with something for scale, like a hand or a coin
- Whether the wall is drywall or plaster. Pre-1940 homes are usually plaster
- The paint color or a leftover can, if you have one
- For water damage, whether the leak has been fixed
Plaster walls and old houses
In many towns around Boston, a third to a half of the homes were built before 1940, and their walls are plaster over wood lath. Plaster cracks along the lath lines when a house settles or dries out in winter heat, and it chips in chunks rather than denting. Repairing it well means keying new material into the lath, not just filling the surface.
Drywall patches need two or three coats of compound with drying time in between, so a bigger repair is often two short visits rather than one long one. Dry winter air speeds that up. Summer humidity slows it down.

Drywall repair questions
Can a handyman repair plaster walls?
Yes. Small plaster cracks and holes are a normal handyman job. The pro keys the patch into the lath, builds it up in coats and matches the texture. Large areas of loose plaster may be worth replacing with drywall, and the pro will tell you which makes sense.
Will the patch show?
A good patch is feathered out wider than the hole and painted to match. If the existing paint has faded, the pro may suggest painting the whole wall so the color is even. You decide before the work starts.
How long does drywall repair take?
Small holes are usually done in one visit, with paint. Larger patches need coats of compound to dry, so plan on two short visits. The pro sets that out in the price before you book.
What about water damaged drywall?
Fix the leak first. Then the stained or soft section is cut out, the cavity checked for moisture and replaced with new board, taped, mudded and painted. Tell the pro when the leak was repaired.
Can the same visit cover other small repairs?
Yes, and it saves you time. Add sticking doors, a loose towel bar or a shelf to the same request and one pro does the whole list.
