What TV mounting covers
Describe your job once. Anything not on the list, say so and the pro prices it with the rest.
- Finding the studs and setting the bracket level and at the right height
- Mounting on drywall, plaster and lath, brick or above a fireplace
- Fixed, tilting and full-motion mounts, yours or one the pro brings
- Soundbars, streaming boxes and a cable cover or in-wall cable kit where the wall allows it
- Taking down an old TV and patching the holes it leaves
- Hauling the box and packing foam away
Have ready when you book
- The TV size and, if you know it, its weight and VESA pattern (it is on the back or in the manual)
- The wall type: drywall, plaster, brick or concrete. Older Massachusetts homes often have plaster and lath
- Where the outlet and cable jack are, and whether you want cables hidden
- A photo of the wall, with the furniture that will sit under the TV
Mounting a TV in an older Massachusetts home
A large share of homes in Greater Boston were built before 1940, and many of those walls are plaster over wood lath, not drywall. A stud finder gets confused by lath, so the pro finds the studs the old fashioned way, uses the right anchors, and avoids cracking the plaster around the bracket.
In triple-deckers and condos, the wall you want is often shared with a neighbor or carries old wiring. Tell the pro what is on the other side. Brick chimneys and fireplaces take masonry anchors and a mount rated for the heat, so say so when you book.

TV mounting questions
Can a handyman mount a TV on a plaster wall?
Yes. Plaster and lath needs the bracket to land on the studs, and the right pilot holes so the plaster does not crack. Tell the pro the home is older and they come with the right anchors and bits.
Do I need to buy the mount first?
Either way works. If you already have one, say which it is. If not, ask the pro to bring a fixed, tilting or full-motion mount sized for your TV, and the price covers it.
Can the cables be hidden in the wall?
Often, on a drywall interior wall with no insulation or fire blocking in the way. The pro uses a low voltage in-wall kit so the power cord stays code compliant. Adding a new outlet behind the TV is electrical work in Massachusetts and goes to an electrician.
How long does TV mounting take?
Most mounts take about an hour. Plaster, brick, a fireplace or hidden cables can add time. You see the price before you book, and the pro confirms the window.
Can you mount a TV above a fireplace?
Yes, with a mount rated for the heat and masonry anchors for brick or stone. A pull-down or tilting mount keeps the viewing angle comfortable from the couch.
