Your Furnace Won't Turn On and the House Is Getting Cold (and When to Call a Pro)

It's 9 degrees out, the thermostat reads 68, and the basement is silent. Most Massachusetts no-heat calls come down to a dead thermostat battery, a flipped service switch, or a safety device doing its job — here's how to check them in order, plus the carbon monoxide signs that mean get out and call 911.

The 6 A.M. Cold House

You wake up and the house is 58 degrees. The thermostat still reads 68, the display looks normal, and the basement is silent — no whoosh, no click, no blower. It's 9 degrees outside. Your first thought is that the furnace is dead and this will cost thousands.

Usually, it isn't. Most no-heat calls in Massachusetts trace to something upstream of the furnace: a dead thermostat battery, a switch somebody flipped, an empty tank, or a safety device doing exactly what it was built to do. The equipment is fine. It's being told not to run.

Here's the order to check, and where the line falls between what you can touch and what Massachusetts law says you can't.


Before Anything Else: The Carbon Monoxide Rule

If a CO alarm is sounding, stop reading. Get every person and pet outside, then call 911 from outside. Don't open windows first, and don't silence the alarm to see if it comes back. Firefighters carry meters; you don't.

The same response applies to these signs, alarm or not:

  • Headache, dizziness, or nausea — flu symptoms without a fever
  • Two or more people, or pets, feeling sick at the same time
  • Symptoms that fade when you leave the house and return when you do
  • Sooty black streaks around the furnace, or heavy condensation on nearby windows
  • A gas flame burning yellow or orange instead of crisp blue

If you smell rotten eggs — the odorant in natural gas — leave first, then call the utility's emergency line from outside. No light switches, no garage door, no restart attempts. Massachusetts has required CO alarms on every level of a home with fossil-fuel equipment since 2006. Replace yours if they're over seven years old.


Reason 1: The Thermostat (Start Here — Always)

A thermostat is a low-voltage switch with a battery in it, and a battery that quits at 3 a.m. in January leaves a healthy furnace idle. Most take two AA alkalines and flash a low-battery icon for weeks first — an icon nobody looks at.

What to do:

  • Install fresh alkaline AAs, then make it an annual fall habit
  • Confirm the mode is HEAT and the fan is on AUTO — a fan left on ON blows room-temperature air constantly, which feels exactly like cold air
  • Set the target 5 degrees above the room reading and wait; most systems delay up to 5 minutes before the burner fires
  • After a power blip, check the schedule didn't revert to a 55-degree setback
  • A blank screen on a hardwired thermostat means the furnace lost power. Go to Reason 2

Reason 2: Power and Fuel — The Switch, the Breaker, the Tank

Every furnace in Massachusetts has a service switch — an ordinary toggle on a red faceplate, at the top of the basement stairs or on a joist above the unit, and from six feet away indistinguishable from a light switch. Which is exactly why it ends up off: someone carrying laundry down the stairs, a kid, a plumber who cut power for the water heater and never flipped it back. Push the front panel shut too; the plunger switch behind it won't let the furnace start otherwise.

Then the breaker, on its own 15- or 20-amp circuit labeled furnace, burner, or heat. A tripped one doesn't always look tripped — it can rest mid-position and read as ON at a glance. Push it all the way OFF, then all the way ON. If it trips again immediately, stop. That's a short or a seizing blower motor, and re-arming it a third time is how furnaces start fires.

Roughly a fifth of Massachusetts homes still heat with oil, one of the highest rates in the country, so check the tank gauge. A delivery alone won't restart you, though: once a tank runs dry the line has to be bled and the burner primed, and sludge off the bottom plugs the filter and nozzle. Running out of oil is a service call, not a fill-up.


Reason 3: A Clogged Filter Tripping the High-Limit Switch

The signature here is short cycling: the furnace fires, runs 3 to 10 minutes, pushes warm air, shuts down short of setpoint, then repeats a few minutes later.

Restricted airflow means heat can't leave the heat exchanger fast enough. Plenum temperature climbs past the high-limit setpoint — typically 180 to 200°F — and the switch cuts the burner. It's protecting the heat exchanger, the part whose cracking lets combustion gases into your air.

What to do:

  • Hold the filter up to a light. If you can't see through it, replace it
  • Match the size printed on the frame exactly (16x25x1, 20x25x1, 20x25x4)
  • Change 1-inch filters monthly through heating season; 4- and 5-inch media filters every 6 to 12 months
  • Open every supply register and clear whatever leans against the return grille

Closing vents in unused rooms of a triple-decker or a 1920s two-family is a classic way to cook your own limit switch.


Reason 4: The Condensate Float Switch on a High-Efficiency Furnace

If your furnace vents through white PVC out a sidewall instead of up a chimney, it's a condensing unit at 90%+ AFUE — and it makes water, close to a gallon an hour on a cold day. That condensate drains through a trap into a floor drain or a small pump.

Every part of that path clogs: slime in the trap, a stuck pump float, a line frozen where it crosses an unheated crawl space. When water backs up, a float switch shuts the furnace off on purpose, because the alternative is water sitting in the burners. Look for a puddle beside the furnace, or a pump that hums without pumping. Emptying the reservoir and flushing the trap with a shop vac is fair homeowner work. So is clearing a 3-foot radius around those sidewall pipes after a nor'easter — bury them and the pressure switch senses the lost draft and refuses to fire.


Reason 5: Pilot Light vs. Hot Surface Ignitor

Furnaces built before the early 1990s use a standing pilot, with relighting instructions printed on the door. Follow those and only those. If it lights and dies within a minute, the thermocouple is failing. If it won't light at all, stop — cycling gas into a sealed cabinet turns a small problem into a big one.

Anything from the mid-1990s on has no pilot. It has a hot surface ignitor: a fragile silicon carbide or nitride element that glows orange for 20 to 40 seconds before the gas valve opens. They're wear parts with a 3-to-7-year life, and they fail in the coldest week of the year — that's when they cycle most. The part is $40 to $90; installed, expect $200 to $400, more after hours.

Watch through the sight glass and see whether it glows. Don't replace it yourself. The element is ceramic, skin oil from bare fingers burns a hot spot that kills it early, and reaching it means opening a cabinet with a live gas valve inside. In Massachusetts, work on gas piping and gas-fired appliances must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter, and oil burner service requires a technician holding an oil burner license. Looking is yours. Opening it up is not.


The Reset Button: Press It Once. Never Twice.

Oil burners have a red reset button on the primary control. Gas furnaces reset by cutting power at the service switch for 30 seconds. The rule is the same either way, and on oil it matters enormously.

That button lets a locked-out burner try one more time. Pressing it twice more sprays unburned oil into a hot combustion chamber. When it finally does ignite, it can ignite all of it at once — a puff-back. That concussive burst drives soot through the ductwork and films every wall, ceiling, and couch with oily black residue, and remediation is an insurance claim measured in thousands.

One press. If it locks out again you have a real fault — no fuel, a plugged nozzle, water in the tank — and it needs a technician. Never jump or bypass a safety switch to force a run. Every limit, rollout, pressure, and float switch on that furnace exists because the failure it prevents is fire or carbon monoxide.


The 10-Minute Checklist Before You Call Anyone

1. Check the CO alarms — sounding means everyone out and 911, not troubleshooting 2. Replace the thermostat batteries; confirm HEAT, fan AUTO, setpoint 5 degrees up 3. Find the red service switch and confirm it's ON 4. Cycle the breaker — full OFF, then full ON, once 5. Push the front panel closed until the door switch latches 6. Replace the filter if you can't see light through it 7. Look for water under the furnace or in the condensate pump 8. Clear the PVC vents outside of snow and ice 9. Read the oil tank gauge 10. Press reset once, then give it a full 10 minutes

If the burner fires and the house starts climbing, you just saved yourself an emergency call at overnight rates.


When to Call a Licensed Pro

Stop and book someone if:

  • The breaker trips again after one reset, or the burner locks out again after one press
  • You smell gas, or anyone in the house has a CO symptom
  • There's soot around the furnace, or a yellow flame where it should be blue
  • It short-cycles with a clean filter
  • The fix means opening the cabinet, touching gas piping, or replacing an ignitor, valve, or control board

Cold makes this urgent in a way a broken air conditioner never is. Below 20°F — routine from Worcester west into the Berkshires — a balloon-framed colonial over an unheated crawl space falls into the 40s within hours, and pipes in exterior walls freeze once indoor air holds below 55. While you wait, open the cabinets under sinks and set faucets to a pencil-thin drip.

An annual tune-up runs $150 to $300 in Massachusetts: flame sensor cleaned, limit and pressure switches tested, combustion analyzed, heat exchanger inspected.
